Barre Fitness as we know it today was created by Lotte Berk in the 1950's after a back injury. Lotte was a German born modern ballet dancer and choreographer that moved to England during the 1930's due to the Nazi regime. She took elements from ballet, yoga, and physiotherapy, to create a program that she started teaching in the 1950's. She marketed is as a "way to improve your sex life" to women. She created a cult like following with celebrities and locals alike. Lydia Bach an avid follower brought Barre to the U.S in the 1970's. Where upbeat music was added and the sexual innuendos toned down. But the essence remained. To date Barre is one of the only forms of fitness created by a woman for women.
Barre fitness classes are a full body workout that run 50-55 minutes. They start with a warm up. Then move on to upper body, legs, booty, abs and then a stretch at the end. Stretches are sprinkled in after each section. Most sections have a ballet essence and you will feel like a strong bad a** ballerina, by the end. Modifications are available for all levels in EVERY class we offer. Modifications can be used to make the movement more attainable, or to increase the intensity and push your self to your limits. Ballet essence but not a dance class. No dance experience required!!
