Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's. Joseph Pilates was German born and lived between England and Germany until he immigrated to New York in 1926.  He met his wife Clara on the voyage over and together they opened the first pilates studio in New York. Pilates is the "God-Father" of pyhsio-therapy.  (In my opinion) In it's inception pilates helped athletes, particularly boxers and men returning from war with significant injuries.  It is said that he used the bed springs to create the first "reformer".  Hospitals didn't have the funds for expensive bed springs at that time. He did utitilize springs but he brought them in. But its a nice story.  Upon moving to New York Joseph Pilates worked with the dancers of the New York City Ballet, during his lifetime 67% of his clients were men.  Today women dominate the practice.  But men are seeing the benefits as well and the number has gone up in the past 10 years significantly from 17% to about 25%.
